ManyChat vs Chatfuel in 2026: two different meters

ManyChat bills by how many people write to you. Chatfuel gives unlimited contacts on one $49 plan and meters the AI instead. Which meter fits you.

TL;DR. These two bill for different things. ManyChat charges by how many people talk to you: $0 with 25 Active Contacts, then $17 (250), $39 (2,500), $99 (7,500) and $199 (25,000), with overage from $0.10 to $0.004 per extra contact. Chatfuel charges $49 a month for AI PRO, gives unlimited active contacts and messages, and meters the AI behind each reply under a fair use allowance it never puts a number on. One row settles most of it: ManyChat offers seven channels including Telegram and TikTok; Chatfuel names Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp.

Comparison pages for these two line up feature bullets and declare a winner. Wrong axis: both build automations, both have a shared inbox, both do AI replies on the paid tier. Two things decide it — which channels your customers use, and which meter you prefer in a good month.

One caveat. ManyChat’s prices here come from its newer model, live since 2 March 2026 and still reaching older accounts country by country: in September 2026 manychat.com/pricing itself still showed the previous Free / Pro-from-$15 / Elite structure. Check which model your region is on.

The two meters

ManyChat’s meter counts people. An Active Contact is one person who touched an automation inside the billing month — a DM, a comment, a story reply — counted once however often they write, and reset monthly even on an annual plan. Go past the allowance and nothing stops: overage reaches the next invoice at $0.10 per extra contact on Essential, $0.05 on Pro, $0.025 on Business and from $0.004 on Advanced, with warnings at 70%, 90% and 100%. You can cap it — a threshold in billing settings sets how many extra contacts you will pay for, after which automations serve only people already active that cycle. Ignore the cap and ManyChat says automations may eventually pause far past the plan maximum.

Chatfuel’s meter counts computation. Its usage page says the plan includes unlimited active contacts and unlimited messages, and that keyword replies, button flows, broadcasts and any non-AI automation stay unlimited regardless of volume. Rationed instead is AI processing — each generated reply, each classified message, each AI-powered automation — under a fair use allowance per billing period. Chatfuel names what drives it (knowledge-base size, instruction length, conversation length) and says the plan fits 98% of businesses, but prints no figure. Exceed it and the bot pauses until you renew early, wait for the next period, or hand over your own OpenAI key, after which fair use stops applying.

So a viral month costs money on ManyChat and silence on Chatfuel. Which you can live with is a real question, and not the same one as “which is cheaper”.

Who each one is built for

ManyChat is built for a creator whose audience lives on social. Its free tier is genuinely usable: 25 Active Contacts, 2 channels from Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Messenger and Telegram, 4 live automations, 1 user, 1 Inbox seat, and a “Powered by Manychat” line on the first message. Essential at $17 keeps the two-channel ceiling but unlocks unlimited automations, lead capture, tags and Google Sheets sync. Pro at $39 raises it to three channels, puts WhatsApp, SMS and email on the menu, and adds AI automation, Inbox labels and rules, integrations and the API. Business at $99 removes the channel cap and adds lead routing; Advanced at $199 tops out at 10 users and 10 Inbox seats, with extra seats at $25 from Pro up. Only Essential and Pro carry a trial.

Chatfuel is built for a business selling on WhatsApp — increasingly, for the agency running that account. Chatfuel Light is free and already includes Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp automations, a shared inbox, automated replies, the flow builder and templates. AI PRO at $49 adds the AI sales manager, an AI knowledge base, AI-powered automations, broadcasts, re-engagement and lead-qualification funnels. The company calls itself an Official Meta Partner and a WhatsApp Business Solution Provider, claims 150,000+ businesses, and writes its home page for marketers reselling WhatsApp lead systems.

That matters more than a feature row: Chatfuel has narrowed, ManyChat has widened.

Where ManyChat wins

  • It publishes everything. Allowances, overage rates, seat prices, annual discounts — you can compute next month’s bill before signing up. Chatfuel’s central limit is a phrase, not a number.
  • It reaches Telegram and TikTok. Chatfuel names neither, so for that inbound the comparison ends on the first row.
  • A gentler ladder. $17 is a real step for an audience of 250 a month; Chatfuel’s only paid step is $49.
  • Instagram automation as a category. Comment-to-DM, story replies and follower triggers, from the free plan — the reason most ManyChat accounts exist.
  • Overage beats a pause. A $15 bill for a busy month is annoying; an assistant going quiet mid-conversation is worse, and that happens on the customer’s side of the screen.

Where Chatfuel wins

  • Unlimited contacts and messages. A post that travels does not move the bill. On ManyChat the same post can push you a tier or leave overage behind.
  • One price to reason about. $49, one plan, no seat maths, no ladder.
  • WhatsApp is free to start. ManyChat charges $39 a month before WhatsApp appears; Chatfuel Light includes it for nothing.
  • Your own OpenAI key. Hand Chatfuel a key and fair use stops applying — you pay OpenAI directly and the ceiling disappears. ManyChat has no equivalent.
  • Non-AI automation is uncapped. Keyword replies, button flows and broadcasts never touch the allowance, so the meter only starts when the AI does.

The third option: doing it inside Telegram

If you are here because everyone writes to you on Telegram, neither fits: ManyChat prices seven channels to reach one, and Chatfuel does not name it.

A Telegram-only support agent is narrower. It runs in your bot and, through Telegram’s Chat Automation setting, replies in your personal DMs under your own name — no Premium on either side. It answers from a knowledge base you feed: a site crawl, a pasted policy, a PDF, a voice memo, a CSV. Matching runs by meaning across 100+ languages and the reply comes back in the asker’s. It also reads what no document holds — order status and tracking, the customer’s own orders and bookings, your catalogue, your free slots — live and scoped to the asker. When neither covers the question it stops, hands you the chat and logs a gap. Replying on your behalf is a Pro feature; the knowledge base and the gaps list are not.

If a conversation ends in a sale, checkout is in the same chat and our commission is 0% — our cut, not the whole cost. A buyer pays $19.99 per 1,000 Stars as a store pack or $14.10 at Telegram’s sell rate while the payout to you is $0.013, and Telegram policy puts digital goods on Stars only; the arithmetic is in what withdrawing Stars actually pays.

Who should not choose it: anyone whose inbound comes from Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, SMS or email; anyone whose funnel is comment-to-DM; anyone who wants a visual canvas; any agency running client accounts.

Where to start

Sort last week’s inbound by where it arrived before reading another feature list. WhatsApp majority and Chatfuel’s free tier settles it in an afternoon; Instagram or TikTok and ManyChat’s does the same for nothing; Telegram and you are choosing between six channels you do not use and a product that does not serve the one you do. Then check volume: Essential at $17 is the cheapest serious option under a few hundred people a month, and past a few thousand ManyChat’s ladder climbs above $49 — while the ceiling protecting Chatfuel’s flat plan is not a number you can see.

What people usually ask

What do ManyChat and Chatfuel cost in 2026?
ManyChat runs five tiers under the pricing model it launched on 2 March 2026: Free at $0 with 25 Active Contacts a month, Essential at $17, Pro at $39, Business at $99 and Advanced at $199, with annual billing at $14, $29, $69 and $139. Those plans are the default for accounts opened on or after that date and are still reaching older accounts country by country. Chatfuel runs two: Chatfuel Light for free, and AI PRO at $49 a month with 29% off on yearly billing.
Which one is cheaper?
It depends entirely on how many people message you. ManyChat is cheaper below roughly 2,500 Active Contacts a month, where Pro at $39 still covers you. Above that its price climbs to $99 and $199, while Chatfuel stays at $49 because its plan includes unlimited active contacts and unlimited messages. The catch is that Chatfuel meters AI processing instead, under a fair use allowance it does not publish as a number.
Does Chatfuel support Telegram?
Its own pages say Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. Telegram is not named on the Chatfuel pricing page, the home page or the usage limits page, checked September 2026. ManyChat does support Telegram, on every tier including Free.
What happens when you hit the limit on each?
Opposite things. On ManyChat your automations keep running past the Active Contact limit and overage is added to the next bill, at $0.10 per extra contact on Essential down to $0.004 on Advanced; you can also set a threshold that caps how much overage you accept. On Chatfuel, exceeding the fair use AI allowance pauses the bot until the limit resets, and the ways out are renewing the plan early, waiting for the next billing period, or supplying your own OpenAI key.
Which one is better for WhatsApp?
Chatfuel puts WhatsApp automations on its free plan and describes itself as an Official Meta Partner and WhatsApp Business Solution Provider. ManyChat gates WhatsApp behind Pro at $39 a month. If WhatsApp is the channel your business runs on, that gap is the answer.
Is a Telegram-only agent a real alternative to either?
Only when Telegram is where your customers already write. It is one channel with no visual flow canvas, no Instagram comment triggers and no email or SMS. What it does instead is answer from your own knowledge base and read your live orders, bookings and free slots at the moment of the question.
